In light of the Asian earthquake / flood disaster, it has fuckin hit home to me just *how* lucky I am. I'm sat here in my warm home, indulging myself in sweets listening to Ava gurgling happily upstairs in her cot, watching images of men and women carrying their dead children and fighting for the very basic need to survive.

I'm like most, sick to the back teeth of constantly being asked to give, these people are not asking, they also never asked to have their homes destroyed and loved ones taken.

I feel that this community 1000 strong that it is could help make a slight difference to a few people, heck maybe even save a life, I dont know.

I suggest we ask each and every one of us to stick a the equivalent of 1 pound Sterling into a Pay Pal account, either a specially setup one or one of our own. I dont mind who does this, I'd do it I really dont mind but the quicker we start the quicker we can make a slight difference.

Heck even if 1 quarter of us give, its 500 quid.

Waddaya think, any suggestions.

Shouldn't we better coordinate some research, and work out the best way to give individually?

There are already many channels available, and most carry tax incentives and such like. If you're employed and pay tax the charity can claim the tax as well back off the IR.

Doing it all via paypal introduces another level of admin, charges and ineficiancy IMO.

Mattley, I'm totally open to suggestions, I just thought it was a easy peasy way with minimum fuss of helping but if you can think of a more productive way to do this then thats great.

I think we have to keep it simple to maximise the amount we can get.

I would love to keep it open for say a cuppla weeks and then send what we have.

If you can look into the best way to give /receive and post back.



Russ I hear ya, I, as do most people, know there are ways to give but thought organising a forum collection is more likely to get us all to stick the pound in then we can present a one of payment to Oxfam.

The Disasters Emergency Committee. It's an umbrella group
covering most major UK aid charities, so the money gets
allocated to the most appropriate charity as needs arise.
They seem like a good organisation to me, and have
run similar appeals in the past.

They've apparently collected £5 Million in the first 24 hours!
Lets help get them to £10 Million in the next 24, admittedly
you'll have trouble getting the donation page to load at the
moment, I've been trying for the last few hours, and am
now going to leave it until early tommorrow morning.

be a great group to donate to.

If I can't give to them. I'll use Amazon tommorrow,
they allow you to donate, and your UK account should
work just fine on the UK site. I donated to the ACR after
9/11 via their site, so it should work again.

With any luck Amazon UK might have something similar
running by tommorrow.

If we wanted to donate from the community as a whole, I'd like to suggest using some of the Travel Fund cash.

In terms of individual donations... We all know the score, each to his own conscience and all that. And, as has been pointed out, gift-aid gives the charity a significant bonus for all UK tax payers.
