I've been sent the tape and prg files for the game by styceATcomcast.net.

Here's the box art:

And here's a screen shot supplied:

Here's the zip file containing all the files:

http://www.medwaypvb.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/scans/Space%20Zap.zip

I can't get the game to work properly in WinVICE's VIC 20; the score shows up, the sounds are there, but the screen is white and the middle graphics are corrupted.

Can anyone get it working?

Is this actually one of Jeff's games?

If so, I'll e-mail the person back to see if they can get it to work, and if so, how.

I got the white screen etc too, but then tried Autostarting the 'Space Zap.tap' file instead of the .prg and it worked OK.

Certainly looks and feels like it could be a Yak game, though I don't actually know. Couldn't see any name in it apart from the company name. I wonder if Yak ever considered changing his name to a symbol as we all did back then like Prince - to that small pixelated llama graphic - then that would actually be his credit up there in the middle the whole time :P

I tried that way, but it stuck at the 'intro' bit. :?

I'll try again tonight.

load from the .tap, then press Enter to go through the instructions, and at the end of the intro press L, then the llama will appear and another 50 seconds' worth of data will load from the tape

you can't use just the .prgs to load the game successfully because there's other stuff on the tape (eg. a character set that's loaded at $1C00 when you run the intro)

the game certainly has Yakly sound effects, graphics and character set...

Ta for that. :)

Just need Yak to confirm whether he wrote it before I upload it to the Archive.

It *IS* my game, something I did as part of the set of games sold by DK'Tronics.

Knowing just how, ah, *scrupulous* the DK'Tronics bloke was I am not surprised to find it apparently sold on to someone else in the US to sell.

I was just going to mention this actually since I have had it knocking about here for a few months now. In fact I'm sure I mentioned it in forum at the time, in a thread to do with Vic-20 loading screens IIRC.

I found this thread, don't think it's the right one though.

I've had this e-mail from Marko, who was also sent the Space Zap files:

Marko Mäkelä, the maintainer of the >8-bit Commodore file archive at FUNET, made a compressed version of the intro and the game. These, as well as a more compact tape image, are now available from http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/vic20/games.basic/unexpanded/

:)

I shall put this lot on my Llamaloads page. 8)

If anyone's got an original of this, I'd be interested in getting it :)

Still won't run:

I auto start the tap file, then after a bit the title screen comes up, then if I hit the Enter key (or any key for that matter) the screen just changes to a load of characters, then one of them is the cursor, and if I type anything it comes on screen as a weird character, but the game doesn't load any more. :?
