I need to get a nice two man tent that could possibly be carryable on a hike (stop that laughing Korruptor)

Any suggestions?

I know fuck all about tents so something easy to put up and super light would be great. It also needs to be something I'm likely to be able to walk into Southampton to buy as I need it for Saturday. Super whizzy NASA designed computer tents that'll take a week to be delivered are no good either :)

Any info gratefully received :)

No expert myself, but I'm constantly astonished at how helpful Milletts staff tend to be, whichever branch I am in. Except Abergavenny, where they are full of shit. I'd not hesitate to go in and see what they say. Plus everyone has already bought their festival tents this year and they'll be looking to clear stock soon...

There's a huge range nowadays, just ask in the outdoor type shop and don't be tempted to get one of these sub-hundred quid cheapies, they can be bad value with shoddy zips and difficult to use.

Have a look at thermorests too, purists will scoff but they are worth the weight IMHO :)

personally i'd suggest a dome tent, i think there are new ones that put themselves up at the flick of a switch, but normal dome tents are pretty quick to do anyway, millets have got cheap own brand ones (eurohike), if you've got a camping or adventure shop they will have more expensive things

The 'Blacks' ones are good Gaz; I bought my Mum a great little two man one for her Birthday last year - it even has little LED lights inside, so you don't have to fumble around for the torch. :)

Constellation series I think it was; mind, they seem to change their range every year or so.

Saunders make the best as far as i am concerned, lightweight, strong, simple to erect and very very durable

http://www.robertsaunders.co.uk/

Any reputable outdoor shop should carry them, by reputable I do not mean Millets.

I have a Fellpine, its lasted about 22 years, still as good as when I bought it, the equivelant model would be the Jetpacker Plus. Been up in snow, gales, storms, lovely sun (occasionally). Put it up on grass, mud, bare rock. Best of all, weighs less than a couple of bags of sugar. And its got a big bell-end.

Remember to take into account weight. I meet so many people on the hills who have spend a fortune on something that would not disgrace a polar explorer, but are so knackered carrying it, they get very low daily mileage.

As for Thermorest, they are for poseurs, gimme my old 5 season Karrimat anyday.

Another tip for walking if your unused to it, get some porous sticky tape stuff , micropore, thats the stuff, and spend some decent money on socks (Thor-Lo very good) and boots (Zamberlan, Trezeta etc) and break them in.

Walking poles as well, you may think they look silly, but transfer a hell of a lot of weight to your arms from your legs when carrying packs.

Ain't that the truth.

I hammock (or I used to, haven't been out for years now). Tent, sleeping bag and ground insulation all in one, very low weight, all you need is a couple of trees.

pop up tents are great, but not very practical as they pack up into a 4 foot wide circular backpack which makes you look like a ninja turtle! great otherwise though.

saw this just now and thought of you.. http://www.woolworths.co.uk/web/jsp/pro ... d=50358977

depending on how heavy it is and how big the bag is, i think i might pick one up at the weekend, as i had to leave my pop up tent at glasto :(

If you're back-packing (i.e. not got a car next to the tent to store stuff in) I'd recommend you get either a 3-man tent or one with a decent porch on it to keep your rucksack and boots in at night.

I talked to a bloke on the phone from Saunders and they only do direct sales now. I asked if I bought one could it be despatched to get here tomorrow and he said no. "Fair enough and thanks for your help" I said. So he says

"You left it too late, a tent's an important bit of equipment and you need to see them properly to select one" In a really smug, I told you so patronising voice and not helpful in the slightest so I ask

"You're mail order only, if I got one from you I wouldn't be able to see it before I bought it anyway"

"Yeah, well bye" SLAM

Charmless fucker. Fuck him and his stupid tents. Anyway

Anyone got any opinions on these:

They're all in stock in the shop down the road

What you need is a Khyam tent mate.
They're the dogs danglies. Not the cheapest (don't buy cheap tents they're not worth it), but they're very quick and easy to put up and you could quite happily camp out at the top of a (British) mountain with no problems at all.
Can't find a direct link, but here's one supplier
Khyam Tentage
